Diocesan fosters excellence in all aspects of education
Diocesan School for Girls has an educational philosophy based on excellence in all aspects of education that embraces the individual strengths and needs of each one of its 1500 students.
Established in 1903 and founded on the Anglican faith, Diocesan has a solid ethical foundation and a harmony between tradition and innovation which underpins every aspect of school life.
The all-girls, independent school, located in park-like grounds in central Auckland, continually develops its academic and extracurricular curriculum to remain at the forefront of education in New Zealand and the rest of the world.
Our academic vision is to foster a lifelong love of learning in our students, starting in Year 1 at our Junior School and continuing through our Middle and Senior Schools to Year 13.
To ensure our students’ education stays relevant to their needs in our increasingly global society, Diocesan offers a dual educational pathway to its senior students.
They can choose to study for either the New Zealand based National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma which enables them to enter some of the world’s most prestigious universities.
Our Junior School, which caters for Year 1 to 6 students, focuses strongly on core subjects as well as offering specialist teaching in French, Science, Technology, Music, Health, Physical Education and Art.
The Junior School is seeking accreditation for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) which is tied into the national curriculum and helps children use analytical and critical thinking skills to enhance life-long learning. The Junior School’s gifted and talented programme provides a variety of activities for children at all ages.
From Year 8, students are immersed in full digital learning with their own laptops. In the Middle and Senior Schools, our academic curriculum offers an extensive range of subject choices, including six languages as well as English, and our students consistently achieve among the highest academic results in the country.
We have a rich history of achievement in a range of sports codes and many students succeed nationally and internationally. Diocesan is renowned for its outstanding achievements in the performing arts of dance, drama, music, debating and theatre sports which are a dynamic part of our culture.
Whatever their abilities, students are encouraged, in a supportive environment, to develop their talents and balance their academic study by joining sports teams, drama groups and learning musical instruments.
They can also enroll in individual speech, music and drama lessons and participate in our choirs, orchestras, bands, annual shows, productions and concerts.
Our beautiful campus is a blend of historic buildings and leading edge facilities including a purpose-built Junior School, science laboratories, 70-classroom equivalent Centennial Building and a new, state-of-the-art indoor aquatic centre with two swimming pools, a fitness centre and 380-seat spectator gallery.
An all-weather artificial turf, underground carpark and world-class 1800-seat performing arts centre are planned to enhance our existing excellent extra-curricular facilities.
We welcome international students from all over the world. International students gain most by enrolling with us for their full secondary education. However, enrolments may range from six months to five years in Middle and Senior School.
International students can benefit from our Centre for Enhancement of Learning which assesses individual student learning needs and provides English as a Second Language teaching, across all subject areas – individually, in pairs or in small groups.
Our comprehensive pastoral care includes counselling, health, chaplaincy services, careers advice, peer mediators and a buddy system to help new students settle into school.
Diocesan School prides itself on a Code of Conduct which focuses on the core values of Service, Tradition, Achievement and Respect.
